Australian Minimum Wage & Award Rates Guide (2026–27)

Employment standards in Australia are regulated by the Fair Work Ombudsman and established under the Fair Work Act 2009.

The National Minimum Wage

The Fair Work Commission reviews minimum wages annually. All employees in the national workplace system are entitled to at least the National Minimum Wage or the rate specified in their industry Modern Award.

• National Minimum Wage: .10 per hour (or .90 per 38-hour week).
• Casual Minimum Wage: .13 per hour (inclusive of 25% casual loading).

Modern Awards & Penalty Rates

Over 120 Modern Awards cover specific industries (e.g. Retail, Hospitality, Building & Construction, Health Services). Awards prescribe higher hourly pay rates based on classification level, plus penalty rates for:

• Evening and night shifts
• Saturday work (typically 125% – 150%)
• Sunday work (typically 150% – 200%)
• Public holidays (typically 225% – 250%)
